Diamond is the hardest mineral on the earth. It is one of the most beautiful creations that Mother Earth has given us. This sparkling gem adds to the list of four precious stones, along with emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Besides the star-like shine that these gems display, they are popular stones for engagement and wedding rings. Diamonds are also valued for their healing and spiritual powers. They are the epitome of luxury and promote truth, courage, and positivity.

Origin and Formation

The only mineral composed mainly of pure carbon is diamond. It is the purest of all the gems in nature as it is made of 99.95% carbon. They are the oldest of all, estimated to be 4.543 billion years old. Formed beneath the earth’s surface under extreme temperature and pressure conditions, carbon atoms are packed tightly together to form these gems. These natural gemstones are formed inside host rocks, either kimberlite or lamproite, near the lithosphere. They are also formed deep inside the earth’s crust close to the lower mantle and are called “super deep diamonds.” Natural diamonds are considered rare as they are carried to the earth’s surface by magnetic eruptions.

Quality and Price

The price of 1 carat Diamond stone starts from $1,300 to $9,000 and can extend even more depending upon the 4 C’s. Let’s find out what these factors are:

Color: As per GIA, the color range goes from D to Z, which means that it goes from colorless to light. The less the color, value of the stone increases (fancy color diamonds are an exception). The rarest and most valuable color grade is D, which appears colorless to both naked eyes and under magnification. Color grades D to F are regarded as the highest quality, whereas K to M graded gems have a faint yellow tint, which is easily visible to the naked eye.

Clarity: The clarity of these gems is graded on a scale that ranges from FL (flawless) to Included (I). Poor clarity with high inclusion commands a lower price. This affects the sparkle of the stone and makes the gem look cloudier. Flawless (FL) diamonds are expensive and rare.

Cut: The GIA grade scale assigns diamond cuts with excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor categories. Excellent cut April birthstone features a maximum amount of sparkle, whereas poor cuts are valued lower.

Carat Weight: 1 carat equals 0.200gms. Larger-carat weight diamonds are rare and expensive. As the weight increases, the value of the stone also increases, but other factors such as cut, color, and clarity also matter. With all the four C’s at the correct place, the value of the diamond increases.
